Jokulsarlon / Jökulsárlón

One of the major attractions in Iceland is the Jokuklsarlon glacial lagoon. The name, written Jökulsárlón in Icelandic, literally means “Glacier river’s lagoon” and is the only glacial lagoon in Iceland where you can see giant icebergs floating on (or rather in) the water.

You can go on a boat tour out on the lagoon itself and I highly recommend doing so because nothing beats being right amongst the giant icebergs.

Of course you can also just stay on shore and enjoy the sights. A walk down river down to where it meets the sea is also advisable and sometimes, if you are lucky, a seal or two might be seen.

If you are not driving on your own, Googling “Jökulsarlón tours” will provide you with many tour providers that offer daytrips to the lagoon. One of the popular ones is Iceland Excursions and their tour will also stop at some interesting sights along the way.
